UMEK is a godfather of European techno and 2023 is the year he celebrates a career that’s lasted 30 years and shows no signs of slowing down. His first release of the year is a two-track EP on his 1605 record label that has become a regular home for his music.
Both of the productions are chunky techno with earth-shaking percussion and pulsating synths that fill the tracks with ripples of energy. UMEK’s releases are often found at the top of Beatport’s sales charts and this release has all the hallmarks of a hit release.
Support for this release ranges from old-school legends like Judge Jules, to new school leaders such as Space 92, and everyone in between.
First on the EP, “Once Again” is bass heavy cut that has electrifying synths and flickers of acid combined with a destructive vocal that adds to the track’s brutal groove. The breakdown is a tantalizing moment of suspense that ends when the percussion slams back in to lift the intensity up a gear.
Also on the release, “Constantly Monitored” has a lighter and more uplifting mood while still having menacing undertones that hold tension. It’s got a euphoric breakdown that ends with the overlapping call and response of the intertwining lead synths.
