The Cosmic Boys on Creating Music as Best Friends

Considered the new French DJing duo in the techno-scene, the Cosmic Boys are emerging as more than just a  duo, but as two friends that have a true passion for creating and expressing techno music. For the two, producing techno music with their DJ sets is a central component to their lives — and their drive of sharing their passion under the label management Scander is what also pushes them to showcase their craft with others.

Hey guys, welcome to 6AM! How are you, what’s good and bad in your world?

Hey, thanks a lot for the invitation :)

We feel pretty good actually! In our world it’s so good to be able to travel again around the world, meet our fans at the shows and being able to do what we love the most. But of course, we have a permanent eye on what’s happening in Ukraine & feel pretty touched & sad about it, almost after the 2 years that the world passed by because of Covid.

How was the pandemic for you and how did it affect you?

It was a brutal & total stop, but it was the same for everybody in the world we guess. We have the chance to live very close to each others which gave us the chance to spend time together, in the studio, with our families and enjoy the little things of life that we had not the time to enjoy in the fast life we had. Finally we all hope that all this is behind us :)

“We have the chance to live very close to each others which gave us the chance to spend time together, in the studio, with our families and enjoy the little things of life.”

The duo live their lives as artists with a humble perspective.

When did you first meet and what made you want to work together?

We met more than 10 years ago at a party that ended in a long afterparty! We had some common friends who introduced each others. Seb was putting production aside at that moment to focus on his label Scander & Gaby was focusing on producing as much tracks as possible. So it matched! We released couple of tracks then together on the label, friendship was born & out of it came the Cosmic Boys project & the launch of our common label, Legend.

What do you think the key elements are to work successfully as a duo?

We are trying to listen to each others and communicate as much as possible. It’s used to say that opposites attracts each others and that’s clearly the case here in our collaborating process! We are 2 very different people in life, but when it comes to the music, our ideas, vision & way of working are very similar, so that’s easy to end up on agreements!

Cosmic Boys recognize that the difference between them is what helps maintain their artistry.

Tell us about your new EP on Monika Kruse’ Terminal M imprint. How did you link up with label?

It is an EP that we did during the pandemic. We directly thought about sending the tracks to Monika & Terminal M, basically, we made those for it! We have been in touch with Monika for 3 years now and since 3 years we were talking about releasing one day an EP but we never really had the time to focus on this…but pandemic made it! So when we had those 3 tracks ready, we sent it to the label & after few days they confirmed them directly :)

When producing tracks, do you each take care of different elements or is completely collaborative?

It’s totally collaborative! We spend all the time in studio together. Sometimes Seb found the melodies & Gaby FX & rhythms, sometimes it’s the opposite, there is no real rule out of it.

How do you work in the studio together? Do you have an idea in your head you work towards or do you just experiment and jam and see what happens?

It’s a melt. When we enter in the studio, we always have an idea which depends also on the mood of the day, of the moment, but the idea can evolve, change depending on how the track in the building is evolving & inspire us. It’s studio magic :)

The Cosmic Boys find inspiration behind their music from everyday life.

The Cosmic BoysWhere is your best environment as DJ’s? Small intimate clubs or the massive festival stages?

Honestly we like both, that’s 2 different things & feelings. Playing on big stages/festivals for thousands peoples is impressing, it’s a great feeling to feel the energy gathering out of the moment you’re dropping the bass & you feel the crowd going nuts!!! But every single DJ started in those intimate sweaty clubs where the vibe is insane. Getting close to the peoples, feeling that atmosphere of the dance floor. That’s 2 different things, but we must say we love both.

What gear do you use currently, does that matter to you?

We are working with Logic Pro X, 2 Yamaha HS80M monitors, Apollo Twin sound card & one AKAI MPK49 midi Keyboard. We never felt the need to add more gear. We think it’s better to know a few gear very well that getting a lot that you only use at 30-40%.

What would you like to see change about the music industry?

We don’t consider ourselves as proper actors of the music industry but as 2 friends who are realizing their dreams and who are sharing their emotions to the world. If there was couple of things that we’ll love to change those days that would be to go back when socials were not more important than the music & when it was more important to get good production that big following. Giving a clear place for newcomers who are releasing a lot of quality music. That are for us the real changes needed in this industry.

“We don’t consider ourselves as proper actors of the music industry but as 2 friends who are realizing their dreams and who are sharing their emotions to the world.”

Creating music as best friends is beneficial than creating music as business partners.

What else have you got in the pipeline for 2022?

First thing is that big release coming on Terminal M early may. The feedbacks we have from the crowd since we are playing those tracks is crazy, so we can’t wait to have this out. We are also organizing our Legend events in winter & summer in our area in south France, in Montpellier. We are working with our manager to export those events now out of this area and we are preparing something very big to come after the summer. A collaboration with T78 with a bunch of huge remixers that will be released in September on our label Legend. Also some huge tours in the building in North/South America, Australia, India and all across Europe, 2022 looks very promising :)
