World renowned physicist Stephen Hawking died peacefully at his home in Cambridge in the early hours of today at the age of 76.
The British scientist was famed for his work with black holes and relativity, and wrote several popular science books including A Brief History of Time. As a 22 year old graduate student in 1963, he learned he had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a neuromuscular wasting disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was given only a few years to live, the illness leaving him in a wheelchair and largely unable to speak except through a voice synthesizer.
