A new report shows the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the UK nightlife industry. The Night Time Industries Association (NTIA)’s report measured the economic value of the nightlife sector for the first time.
The industry’s contribution accounted for 425,000 jobs across the UK in 2018 and made up 1.6 percent of national GDP—or £36.4 billion—in 2019. “After the 2008 economic crisis, it was hospitality that led the recovery, driving other forms of job creation and economic activity—the night-time economy was a big part of that,” says NTIA CEO Michael Kill. “The same can be true of this economic crisis.”
As the UK continues to chart its recovery from the pandemic, nightlife venues await clarification on the possible introduction of vaccine passports. A recently introduced government-led insurance scheme will only be effective if severe restrictions, such as another lockdown, are enforced.
