The debut album from Nicolas Duvoisin, titled Mon Premier, is scheduled for November 16th release on his Fantastic Friends label and comes with stellar remixes from Luciano, Mihai Popoviciu, Christian Burkhardt and Sascha Dive.
Featuring nine originals, Mon Premier spans through dub, ambient, minimal and house, as our premiere of “Dub One” below so brilliantly illustrates.
2019 was a year full of celebrations for Nicolas Duvoisin. Not only did his label Fantastic Friends turn 10, he also celebrated his 20 years of career as a DJ/Producer and, last but not least, he experienced the joys of becoming a father for the first time. It was clearly this powerful emotional context that pushed Nicolas Duvoisin to work on a more substantial project, exploring wider horizons and stepping out of his comfort zone.
‘Mon Premier’ is definitely a testament to the artist’s maturity and courage, displaying more sensitivity and intimacy than what the usual club night behind the decks generally allows. Nicolas took the freedom to let his inspiration bring him into unknown territories, working without a particular framework, style or label in mind and starting from scratch for each track of the album. The challenge was also to experiment with new writing approaches and techniques, in order to lose some of the methods and habits many artists get trapped into at certain points in their careers.
The result is an eclectic collection of sounds, moving through dub, ambient, minimal and house, patiently put together in Nicolas’ studio near Lausanne, away from the frenzy of the dancefloor. Dive into Nicolas Duvoisin’s ever-expanding universe and enjoy the ride.

Hi Nicolas, where are you in the world? How have you been these crazy past few months?
Hi, I’m currently located in Lausanne, Switzerland. The last couple of months have been particularly challenging with everything that has been going on around the world! Luckily enough we were able to make the most of the nightlife here as the bars and clubs were still open up until now! I am currently focusing on my album and my family.
You are set to release your debut album Mon Premiere this month. Can you tell us a bit about the story behind the release? How long have you been working on it?
Yes, it is my first album, I definitely hadn’t imagined that it would turn into such a big adventure, to be able to just focus on the creation of my music with no regard of whether it suits a club sound. The reason I chose The name ‘Mon Premiere’ is as the name implies it is my first album but it is also about the birth of my son who was born in December 2019, that’s also why there is a swing on the cover of the album. It took me about 4 month’s to produce the album.
After the originals are out, you have a selection of remixes coming too. How did you go about selecting who would remix your work? Are you happy with the results?
It was a great honour to have artists such as Luciano, Burkardt, Mihai Popoviciu, or even Sascha Dive remix my tunes. It is also really interesting to hear your music having been remixed in different styles. I’m also glad to call these artists my friends and it is always a pleasure to work with them! Some have even worked with my label Fantastic Friends.
What was the creative process like? I’ve heard you have a lovely studio set up, what were some of your most-used synths?
The idea was to just go to the studio and go with the flow. Let the mood inspire me as much as the music I listen to. I do have a wonderful set up now thank you, I’m proud to say I have a great set of instruments that I used for the album such as the MFB Tanzbar 2 Rhytmique, the Jupiter 6, the Roland boutique JU-06, JP-08 for synths and the Delay Moog and the Eventide H9 max for effects.
You also head up the Plastic Fantastic record store. Do you feel running a record store has helped you when it comes to writing music and DJing?
I don’t think selling records helped me compose music but it did help me extend my musical knowledge and helped me start up Fantastic Friends Recording. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Fantastic Friends Family (Mandarin, Robin, Anouck, Luca and Anthony) for all the hard work they put into the label.
Why do you feel it is important to continue to release music on vinyl?
I strongly think that vinyl’s offer more credibility towards the electronic music stage.
Nevertheless quality means higher fees the cost of producing a vinyl’s is much higher than a digital recording which is also why we think twice before doing it, and also why there is so much digital recordings on the market.
But to tell you the truth I am just a huge fan of vinyl. To put it simply to me there isn’t anything more satisfying than holding the music I made in my hand and being able to share it with the people I love.
What will be the first record you play when we can finally pack out a club again?
Tobi Neumann & Patti Ense – Own Me (What Mix). This track is the one and only that I will be playing for the intro!
