Hi there, it’s a pleasure to chat with you today, how’s 2017 been and what have been your highlights so far?
I would say a few of my tracks getting multiple licenses to some of the biggest Ibiza and ADE compilations with the likes of Toolroom, CR2 and Phonetic.
You took the plunge and set up your own label ON IT Recordings earlier this year, which artists have you been working with so far and what are your goals for the brand?
I’ve been lucky to work with some of my favorite artists so early. The likes of Funk D’Void, Jey Kurmis, Barber, Tuff London, Brett Gould and many more. House has been key part of my life for 20 years, so the goal is to create something in the scene which oozes quality which has a solid reputation for great music and easy to deal with.
What are the essential credentials for an ON IT release?
Great music! Typically, more on a tech vibe.
Have you any plans to take the next steps and launch ON IT events in the near future?
Yes, its something Mark, our label manger, and I have discussed. Its on our to do list for 2018.
You’re new release “Disco’s Got His Revenge” has just come out, including a remix from Hott Like Detroit, tell us about the release.
“Disco Revenge” has always been a classic of classics for me and that riff is stand out. I felt it would work to use that original Harvey Mason sample and build it into a more modern tech focused dance floor roller with a tight groove and modern arrangement. I didn’t want to lose that riff, but keep it on the right side of cheesy. I think it worked!
Do you tend to use a lot of sampling in your tracks in general, how do you typically go about writing and what inspires you?
I come from the acid house era so a lot of the classics resonate with me. So some of my tracks are sample heavy, but then some aren’t. It just depends on what sort of idea I have for the track.
Aside of your own label, where else can we check out ONYVA’s sound?
Toolroom, CR2, Phonetic, Red Lunar and more! Check out my SoundCloud!
Which producers are rocking your world right now?
So many! If had to pick one it would be Camelphat. Their productions and variety of sounds is superb.
And is there anyone you’d like to collaborate with, or do you prefer to fly solo?
I’ve tried a few times over the years, but unless your sat in the studio together its hard. I’m always open to offers as there may be a good way of working remotely which I don’t know about it.
Do you remember your first gig? Where was it and how did it go?
My first main big gig was in Turku, Finland headlining a techno event on 98′ on a pair of 1210’s. I loved it, I was only 19/20.
As a DJ, tell us about your sound.
I love all sorts of house and electronica so it really does depend on the crowd or vibe. I enjoy most playing to a packed dance floor who want to dance. I like to keep the energy high, but not too monotonous for track after track, so will try and keep it varied and keep that connection with the floor.
Out of all the places you’ve Dj’ed, what has been your favourite gig so far and where would you most like to play in 2018?
Too many to choose from! in 2018 I would love to start playing a few more festivals.
If you could play a back 2 back set with any DJ in the world, who would it be?
Again, so many! I would say Green Velvet as his sound would work perfectly for mine on a dance floor. However, Carl Cox at Space would have been something else.
Which dance track holds the most precious memories for you?
Last Rhythm – “Last Rhythm”.
What do you most like and dislike about the current house music scene and what would you like to see change?
I’m not here to change things, I will just do my thing and keep smiling.
What else are you working on at the moment you’d like to tell us about?
I’ve just finished a remix for Trouve Grooves called “Take”. Coming out in December and I’m really happy with it. Its got a deeper vibe with a wicked vocal.
