How to Get Your Children Involved in Electronic Music Production

Electronic music production is a great and valuable activity for children. Not only does it allow them to have fun constructively, but it also stimulates all the areas of a child’s development. When listening to, learning, and playing music, kids get involved emotionally, socially, intellectually, physically, and linguistically.

While many parents try to ignite their children’s interest in general music, others may want to get them involved in a specific area of music. Sometimes, the kids exhibit a particular interest in a certain music genre or activity.

If your kids seem to like electronic music, and you want to help them develop this new passion, here are some useful tips to get them started.

What Equipment Do You Need?

Producing electronic music requires the necessary tools. If you’re just getting started, start by buying the most basic equipment (some of which you may already have). Here is a list of the essential things your child is going to need.

Most likely, the computer that you already own is enough for your children to get started. It can be a desktop computer, a laptop, or even a tablet. The main requirement is that the computer is fast enough, and that allows you to record music. Nowadays, a lot of young music producers record their songs on their laptops or even smartphones. If you are considering buying a new computer for your kids, there are plenty of options in terms of both prices and quality. Many Windows laptops are affordable and all your children need to start producing electronic music.

To learn how to tell each sound with precision, normal computer speakers are usually not enough. A good set of headphones will help your kids test and edit music better. Look for headphones that are comfortable, durable, and portable. Nowadays, wireless headphones are also available, although they tend to be more expensive than those with a cable.

Digital Audio Workstation

A DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) is an app that is used for recording, editing, and mixing music. It allows the user to manipulate both acoustic and electric sounds. Some DAWs are available for free, including Garageband and Ableton Live Lite.

A free DAW is great for beginners, as it usually includes all the basic features. After your kid has learned the fundamentals, you can consider a paid and more advanced DAW.

Learning an Instrument Too?

Becoming skilled at producing electronic music doesn’t require learning how to play a traditional music instrument. However, many successful electronic music producers are usually good at playing at least one instrument.

Drums are a popular choice among electronic music artists because they are the quintessential instrument for those who like setting the rhythm of a song. If your kid is interested in learning how to play drums, there are plenty of junior drum kits available, some of which are also quite affordable. Keyboard and bass are also good options for electronic music learners.

What Activities Should You Engage Your Kids In?

Letting your children play around spontaneously with a digital audio workstation can help them familiarize themselves with the software and get the hang of it. However, there are some specific activities you can encourage them to do if you want to speed up the learning process. Here are some examples.

  • Creating a basic set and letting your kid develop the rest.
  • Experimenting with different loops and analyzing the results.
  • Giving your kids a visual element (e.g., a picture) for them to use as inspiration for a track.
  • Asking them to write a track in different genres so that they understand the specific features of each one.
  • Cutting a track in pieces and mixing them so that your kids can rearrange them.
  • Letting them play around with filters.

Should You Consider Music Lessons?

If your kids respond well to electronic music and start developing a passion for it, there’s the option of enrolling them in a course to further their skills and knowledge. You can start by looking for classes and private teachers in your area. However, don’t worry if there aren’t many options available where you live. Many courses are available online, both in the form of 1-to-1 lessons, group classes, and pre-recorded videos.

A simple Google search will provide you plenty of information about the different types of online courses available. Look for user reviews for each course and select one with good ratings. Online courses tend to be cheaper than in-person lessons but they can be equally effective if your children are passionate enough about the topic. For starters, you can also look for some free YouTube tutorials and see how your kid responds to them.

What Helpful Skills Will Your Kids Learn Through Electronic Music Production?

Learning electronic music production will also help your children develop skills that they will find useful in many areas of learning and life in general.

Learning electronic music production teaches them how to listen carefully and pay attention to details, something that will come in handy when learning other topics and interacting with other people as they grow up.

Moreover, it will encourage them to be creative and use art to express their feelings in a positive and constructive way. Having sharp emotional intelligence will be a great asset in their social life as adults.

Electronic music production also teaches kids how to be disciplined and organized, as it takes time and patience to build a good song. They will learn that good things only come when you work hard for them and put in the effort, which is one of the most valuable lessons a child can receive.
