Digging Deeper with BOHO

If you’re an avid reader of our site you will be very familiar with BOHO and his Jannowitz Records and Jaw Dropping Records imprints, as we have featured premieres and releases from both labels plenty of times, and have also invited BOHO for the 116th edition of our weekly Global Vibe Radio mix exactly a year ago today, on June 12th of 2018.

BOHO is the artistic project of Lars Kohl, a German producer, DJ and label owner who has made progress by leaps and bounds over the last five years across all spectrums of his electronic music endeavors. Based out of Cologne, Lars’ imprints have been churning out quality techno and progressive-tinged releases for the best of 5 years now, with artists the likes of Maksim Dark, Kaiser Souzai, Matt Sassari, Alberto Ruiz and Justin James just as a selection of the names who have released on Jannowitz.

At 6AM we thought it was time to formally sit down and have a chat with Lars to learn more about both the BOHO and Jannowitz projects, as well as about him on a more personal level.

Hi Lars, nice chatting with you today! How is your 2019 going?

I’m glad too, it’s always refreshing to chat with you. 2019 started off really well, because I signed my first release on Octopus Recordings 2 days ago. How could it start any better?

That’s awesome, congratulations! Firstly let me say thank you for the constant collaborations between your label Jannowitz Records, and 6AM. You guys have been pushing quality music for a long time and it’s a pleasure for us to have a small role in making your releases heard throughout the world!

Awesome! Thanks, I like and enjoy the collaboration too.

Before we talk about music too much, can you tell us a little bit about yourself, where you were born and how life was growing up for you?

I was born in Trier, the oldest city in Germany. She is small with 100,000 inhabitants, but I grew up there and moved to Cologne at the age of 24 and I love it here.

At what point did you discover electronic music?

I come originally from the hip-hop era, listening to Snoop Dog, Dr. Dre, artists like that (smiles). Then I began to get involved with electronic music more and more because of my dad and his friends put me onto house music when I was 16-18 years old.

The movie “Studio 54” has influenced me very much and I have learned to love electronic music from there. Then at the age of 19 I went to techno parties with my friends and really understood the concept of the music in a dark club and everything that it involves.

How would you classify the kind of electronic music you enjoy?

I actually enjoy many kinds of electronic music, to commit oneself to one type would be boring and awful. From analog productions to techno, melodic, using vocals etc. I like a lot of different kinds.

What was born first, the BOHO project or the Jannowitz label?

Jannowitz Records was born 5 years ago, and it’s been 2 years since I began BOHO.

How do you feel about the progress of Jannowitz over the last two years?

If I’m honest, it’s a 24/7 job but it’s progressing daily and in the last 2 years we have grown a lot, we have tried and improved or changed many things. New incredible and great artists have been added to our family.

Now have a really great team, where everyone has their task and does their job with passion.

In addition, the quality of the label has improved and reinforced in many ways. Also since January 2019 there is our new baby,
Jaw Dropping Records which is run by my lovely wife, Rachel Raw.

What are some of your favorite label releases so far?

I knew a question like this would come up… (laughs). Shit, I really like a lot of our releases because since I usually compile the releases by myself, it’s actually the sound I really love.

For almost 5 years it’s been very hard to choose my favorites because it always depends on my mood.

Fair enough, that is a tough question to answer for any label owner. What is the goal and direction of the label right now, and is there anything exciting in the works for the coming months that you can tell us about?

We are definitely in the right direction with which we can best identify ourselves at the moment.

The releases are sounding somewhere between minimal and techno, and have progressive influences. In the first 2 years we were a lot more melodic, but we got a bit away from that. You just need some time to discover the right artists and the right sound for you.

We mostly stand with peak-time tracks and a sexy groove must always be there for us. With the remixess we mostly leave the door open for artists to be more experimental in order to make the releases very multifaceted.

The next milestone will be our third vinyl release called Pinkfinger, out on 8th July and it’s a BOHO production.

The release is a collaboration with incredible great artists: Heerhorst, Vazik, Christian Bonori and the enchanting Xenia Beliayeva.

Also for the very first time we are planning a huge Best of 5 Years Jannowitz Records double-compilation with about 60 tracks, scheduled for this coming December.

Another great thing is that we are currently planning a new additional project. Soon we will offer exclusive sample packs from different artists via Beatport: “Signature Sounds by JAW” will be born!

A lot of great things happening for you, that’s amazing. As an artist yourself, who inspires you these days?

I always keep an eye on Maksim Dark, Mr. Bizz, Mycell, Citizen Kain, Heerhorst, Maceo Plex & Rachel Raw

What has been the best gig you’ve ever played?

The most intense gig was an extended set at Sisyphos Berlin! Also when I had the second tour in India I played in
Goa at Waters Beach Club and it was just weird there, in a very good way of course

You’re a producer, DJ and label owner. What else do you do? If you even have time for anything else that is

I rarely have time for other things, but when I do I love to go out for food and to try new culinary delights.

Otherwise, I have chosen my other hobby to be traveling as part of my profession.

What is your favorite non-music-related hobby?

Other than what I mentioned, and in case I have spare time, I love to cook by myself, or to have a nice BBQ with friends. Sometimes I also work as an actor for different TV shows and commercials.

If you could choose one favorite meal, what would it be?

A fresh and thin Italian Salami Pizza… Yummy!

What is a typical weekday like for you?

Didn’t I say I’m a 24/7 hustler?

I get up, check e-mails, coffee, e-mails and music, more coffee, planning and promoting releases, phoning and unexpectedly the day is always over… (laughs). Then in the evening, I try to have a dinner together with friends or my girl.

Sounds like a familiar kind of life to mine!

And finally, tell us a secret about yourself not many people know about!

A secret… is that back in the days I was a barber/hairdresser with my own business!

Wow, that was unexpected. Thank you for the chat Lars and speak to you soon!
