Digging Deeper with Anfisa Letyago

Siberian born Anfisa Letyago is fast becoming one of the leaders of the new school when it comes to delivering cutting edge dance music.

Already set for an exciting 2019 with 2 EP’s lined up on Intec and currently making big waves with her brilliant Bright Lights EP on Nervous, 6AM checked in to find out more.

Hi Anfisa, it’s a pleasure to chat with you today, how was your festive season and what did you do to celebrate?

Hello, guys nice to meet you. My celebration season has been intense, travel, gigs and parties. New years eve I spent with my family and friends in Napoli.

Heading into 2019 what goals have you set yourself and what do you hope to achieve?

2019 will be a year filled with music. My first EP on Nervous was released January 18th and then my track ‘Take It Easy’ on Redrum Music straight afterward.

Later in the year, I have two EPs scheduled on INTEC, ‘Catch The Spirit’ and ‘Hypnotic’ and I am really keen on those too. My professional relationship with Carl is an important one to me, where the only thing we speak about is the music, it all happened so naturally. I have many ideas about future tracks, so I will be back in the studio soon and I’ve got lots of good gigs coming up, so it’s a positive moment for me.

Who or what first turned you on to DJing and then on to producing and what was your first release?

Only love and passion. Actually it started because I enjoyed the idea of sharing with other people my love for some music, so I started to select, but almost ‘randomly’ and not picking any specific genre, just the tracks that moved me inside; so I couldn’t wait to then go in the club to play and see people react. It’s quite emotional.

After many years as a selector, I started making my own productions, I think it was a natural approach which happened 4 years ago, but honestly at first they were horrible LOL. Step by step I dedicated my time to it and started to find my own way. I managed to put my feelings into the music, so it was easier in a certain way to produce. In 2016 I did a collaboration with Leroy Styles for Spinning Records with a very groovy track! However, I felt it was not 100% me. It took a while, but I managed to find my own way of putting emotions into my music and I released I Feel EP in May on Natura Viva. It has got a house soul with very warm vocals with a bassline that is very direct and strong. It was a bit of a revelation and turning point for me. I’ve since made so much music that has been appreciated and played all over, especially by Carl Cox in many stages around the world.

How would you describe your sound?

I was raised in the electronic scene, but my roots belong to house music and I am evolving with a Techno sound now productions wise. However, for DJ sets I always follow the guidelines of my sound, but not forgetting I was born as a DJ, so I don’t wanna see people standing still on the dance floor, I love to create that sharing atmosphere with people, the one I was mentioning before. ‘Music Sounds Better With You’ explains it all. An evergreen track, still often in my selections.

Who did you listen to growing up and have they had an influence on your music today?

I have been listening to so much, really from all kinds of genres, I admire so many producers in the electronic and dance scene, of which some have been mentors for me, the list could be infinite. For sure Daft Punk, Underworld, Norman Hook, Eric Prydz , Carl Cox, Frankie Knuckles and bands such as New Order, Depeche Mode and The Prodigy, etc.

The legendary label Nervous Records released your new Bright Lights EP, how does it sound and are you happy with the results?

I have been so very happy to release on Nervous, as you said they are legendary, its a 4 track EP that journey’s through Tech and deep grooves with house sensibilities. I did not expect to have such opportunity and I am excited about it and about the results since looks like the tracks have had great feedback, so I really couldn’t ask for more!

The sound is a lot more underground compared to your early releases, is this the musical direction you’re gravitating towards now?

As I mentioned at the beginning, I am always evolving and I try to identify myself as best as I can and in the best way with the sounds that inspire me. For sure I feel more at ease creating an underground sound and you can tell that from my recent productions too.

You have also made friends with a certain Mr. Carl Cox who has been supporting your music and a bird tells us you have some exciting news this year. Do tell!?

Well, I met him personally and Carl is as great as he looks – always charismatic and smiling. I was lucky enough to get him to listen to my music which he immediately started to play everywhere, so having two EP’s on Intec is really the best news I could have for my 2019.

What’s your favorite piece of studio kit?

For sure my Midi keyboard, I play with it a lot.

Who would you most like to make a collaboration with?

With Carl!

What’s been your own most memorable gig to date and where would you most love to play in the future?

Well in the last 10 years I have been playing many gigs, festival and concerts where I all bear in my heart in my shows, every place is unique and special. I can’t choose just one as it’s is really difficult. I can say I like playing in my city of adoption – Napoli, because playing at home is totally different.

Which producers are currently smashing it for you?

Dj Koze, I really love his style! And Peggy Gou for sure.

What’s the best DJ performance you’ve seen this year?

Eric Prydz with his laser show!

Which dance track holds the most precious memories for you?

Guru Josh-Infinity 1990.

Finally, please tell us a secret nobody knows about you?

Well if it’s a secret, then I can’t tell! (laughs) However, something nobody knows about me is that up to the age of 17 years old, my only means of transport was the sledge!
