Now here is a man with a voice to behold: meet Gospel House singer Aaron K Gray, who has been seriously turning heads on the scene with his amazing soulful vocal range!
6AM Dig Deeper as he releases his stunning A Journey Into House album on Quantize Recordings.
Hi Aaron, it’s a pleasure to chat with you today, how is 2019 treating you so far?
2019 for me has been awesome so far, and it looks like it’s getting better.
What goals have you set yourself for this year and what are you most looking forward to?
I hope to make it to the top 20 artists in Traxsource this year and I really really would like to see ‘A Journey Into House’ do really well. Hopefully, I’ll get to go to ADE this year too.
For those who don’t know you, how would you describe your sound?
I would describe my sound as something you can feel, the sound of encouragement – sometimes it’s a sound that motivates you, and sometimes it’s a sound of healing and love.
Who or what first turned you on to singing and songwriting and more specifically how did you get into house music?
I was born and raised in Florida, my parents were pastors and I loved to sing with the choir my mother directed, so I fell in love with music from an early age. I was introduced to house by Junior White & Noelle Barbera who found me in a chapel singing with a choir, when they presented me with the opportunity, my 1st reaction was “Really?? Me?” Lolol. They then brought me in the studio with Gianni Fontana, another amazing musician, we recorded ‘Wonder Why’ together, which was my 1st house release on Tony Humphries’ label and house music has been a blessing to me ever since. Shout Out To Junior, Noelle, Gianni and Tony!
What pearls of wisdom have you got that you can share with new producers just starting out?
No, artist, producer, or label really knows if the people will take to your music, but we do our best to give them music we hope they will like. And when people do enjoy what we make for them, it makes us all very happy. I would say to new singers/song writers when you feel like giving up, remember why you got started in the 1st place and never let that go, study, and compete only with yourself.
You’re releasing your 2nd artist album’ ‘A Journey Into House’ ’on Dj Spen’s Quantize label, what can you tell us about the release?
Oh wow, this release….. It features 17 songs which journey’s through Gospel, House and Afro and it has some of the most amazing work done with producers that you will never forget once you click play. Each song has it’s own message and love to give, that will help you get through some tough times. We really wanted to give the people music they can feel and dance to.
What’s your favourite or most meaningful track on the album and why?
I don’t have a favorite track, LOL, I love everything on this album, I mean everything! Even if I myself am down, I can find the right song to lift me up, if I just wanna dance I can get that, if I wanna feel love, this too is on the album, parts of my life story as well. ‘All I Need’ is actually a very true story and dear to my heart, which I hope the people can relate to, as it tells the story of how I got over a broken heart time and time again.
There’s also a really great cover of Christopher Cross’ classic ‘Ride Like The Wind’, what made you chose that record to cover?
To be completely honest, John A. Jackson introduced me to ‘Ride Like The Wind’, I had not heard of it prior too, I listened to it and found the connection from my life to and did a small bit of rewriting to make it even more personal and it’s been a love of mine ever since.
You’ve worked with a lot of different producers on the release, tell us a bit more about who is involved?
So we Have Junior White & Noelle Barbera, DJ Gomi, DJ Spen, Michelle Chivirani, DJ Beloved, Mark Francis, Graham Knox Frazier, Scott Wozniak and more. And I can’t thank them enough for the beautiful work they have done on ‘A Journey Into House’. If you haven’t heard it yet, go check it out, it’s a must-hear, 7 releases from the album have already hit the Traxsource top 10, so I’m super grateful.
Aside of the prominent Gospel message running through your songs, what else influences your writing?
Life itself is a great influence, past experiences, things I hope to see change for the betterment of all mankind as well.
What was the most challenging song to make on the album?
It’s hard to answer that, I am blessed to do what I love so I don’t find it hard. I find great joy in making music, the ups and downs, all of it is a joy.
Have you any plans to tour the album live at all?
I would love to tour with ‘A Journey Into House’, I think the title would be a great tour name as well. If anyone is interested in booking me for a tour feel free to reach out to my manager John Jackson. But I will talk to Quantize and see what we can do.
Which house track holds the most precious memories for you and why?
‘Surrounded’ by Josh Milan, to this day that song touches my heart and makes me feel surrounded by love.
Who are your top 5 current Gospel House producers?
Brian Pope, Junior White, Mark Francis, DJ Gomi and Michele Chiavarini.
Finally, what else is coming up that you can tell us about?
So… I have a duet that I am working on with someone that is guaranteed to blow you away, that’s all I can tell you for now! Lol!
Thank you so much for interviewing me, this was truly a great experience, I look forward to interviewing with you again. Blessings be with you and the people always!!
