While Art Department, Loco Dice, Seth Troxler and the likes are considered Underground artists, they are definitely more exposed on the surface than the most of the artists who share the same passion and love for that underground sound. Today, we showcase the first series of ‘Below the Surface’ where the concept is to expose and feature artists, labels, individuals, and organizations who we believe deserves recognition for their efforts and contribution in our industry.
STARKFutures Recordings, based in Chelmsford, UK (outskirts of London), is a label which has been amassing some formidable electronica under it’s Tamlaesque logo imprint since its incarnation earlier this year, with its flagship act STARK.
The label is run by Simon Granger, Paul Fossett (Eiger) and David Gooday. With roots stemming from David & Simon’s involvement in Nitzer Ebb, who still to this day have tracks championed by the likes of Richie Hawtin & Nina Kraviz; collectively, they have very clear ideals and share the belief in an important but simple ethos. To release the music they like with no particular genre or agenda that always has the required level of quality. The label chooses to work mainly with new and sometimes unknown artists, so as to give these acts a platform to release their music unconditionally…an ethos not dissimilar to some of the best British post punk labels like Manchester’s Factory.
Some of the tracks released through ‘Futures have already been blessed with remixes and treatments from the likes of American house music veteran Brett Johnson, The Shamen’s/Superfreq boss Mr. C, Hijacker & Stick, Alex Arnout, and Lo. The label also features artists from Europe who have been featured in on compilation’s such as Baseware’s Ibiza Essentials 2014 and ADE Essentials 2014.
