To close out the week, we welcome a guest mix by respected producer and DJ Brett Gould.
Brett has been firing on all cylinders and on 13th of April he continued to add to his already impressive release schedule with a brand-new Get Down EP on Idris Elba’s 7 Wallace imprint, which you can find on Beatport. You can find the track list for the mix at the end of the article.
With a growing number of acclaimed releases on some of the most respected imprints in the business, there͛s no doubt that Brett Gould has firmly cemented his place within the underground house circuit. Building his reputation behind the decks through a two-year residency at London͛s Lightbox, as well as playing alongside the likes of Eats Everything, Solardo, Mark Jenkyns, Sasha, Franky Rizardo and more, he has quickly become one of the scene͛s most exciting and accomplished talents.
After hearing ‘Get Down’ and ‘Late Night,’ Idris snapped up both of Brett’s productions. Already clocking up impressive support, it’s easy to hear why ‘Get Down’ ticked the right boxes for Idris. Add Huxley into the mix for his take on the release and there was only ever going to be one outcome.
The EP kicks off with an industrial backbeat, which is reinforced by a weighty, rolling bassline that will get any warehouse shaking. Teases of vocal chops and intricate synth-work eventually melts down into a funky, driving groove – the suitably titled ‘Get Down’ will have dance floors moving ‘til the lights come on. ‘Late Night’ delves into the murkier, darker realms of house music. A club-ready record that’s full to the brim with danceability, this one is driven by its percussive layers and punchy bassline. With chilled atmospherics and a whole host of synth stabs, this is a serious statement of intent from the London-based producer.
Speaking about the tracks, Brett said:
“I went deep within my sample searching for ‘Late Night’ and found someone talking about their clubbing experiences and it seemed to feel right. With ‘Get Down’ I went for straight-up house percussion but also kept it groovy. I then created the bass and realized it was a strong hook in itself. When Idris heard it he absolutely loved it – his comments were ‘this is the one!'”
Huxley adds even more fire to the package with a pumping remix of ‘Late Night.’ Bumping synths and samples, big impact drops and through-the- roof energy levels – this is the perfect way to end the EP. In January Brett released on Solardo’s Solá imprint and spent a month in Beatport’s Tech-House chart top 50. February saw him release on Kevin McKay’s Glasgow Underground which saw huge spins from the likes of Monki on BBC Radio 1.
Brett’s impressive back catalogue shows that he knows his way around a studio and yet again, he somehow manages to exceed expectations – you can certainly expect the ‘Get Down’ EP to be a staple weapon in sets across the globe this summer.
