Matthew Dear presents DELQA, an Audiovisual Project in New York

Matthew Dear has revealed DELQA, an interactive art installation that will be open to the public from August 6-9 at Manhattan’s New Museum. DELQA is a collaboration by Dear and a team of artists and designers. The project will be on display at the Lower East Side’s New Inc Studio by the museum.

Matthew Dear blurs the lines between audio and visual creativity by incorporating the environment and producing new ideas through his music, notably by utilizing the playground of industrial sounds found at Detroit’s abandoned General Electric factory to produce the song Drop Science. He’s developed a musical ethos that resonates greatly with the audience, and is a noble innovator within the industry.

“I wanted to compose a sonic dreamscape, fully realizing that dreams are weird and not always black and white. The music rests between peaceful and chaotic states, allowing the listener to come up with their own story while engaging with the piece.” – Matthew Dear on the DELQA Project

The project will be open next week from 11:00 AM – 9:00 PM on Thursday and Friday, and from 11:00 AM -6:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday. In order to attend you must RSVP through DELQA’s official site.

Erick Morillo “Something for Carl Cox” out on Subliminal Records

“I have never had a record given to me with my name in the title! It’s always a hard thing to do because of the expectations of that, but Erick came up with an amazing track that I would play in my sets in clubs or festivals, as it has the Coxy sound which I love to play. It’s funky, pumping tech-house energy and I feel very proud to play this track. Thank you Erick!” – Carl Cox, July 2015

Just released on Subliminal Records, Erick Morillo’s track Something for Carl Cox is a banging tech-house tribute to the techno powerhouse producer. The track is energetically fresh with a sexy piano stab near the end, making it an ideal tune for the club or beach party.

Erick Morillo is a celebrated legend at the roots of house music and will be making the rounds this year as a monthly resident of Space Ibiza. Morillo tested the ropes of the track at Space Ibiza and Ministry of Sound, and Carl Cox himself dropped this huge tune at EDC Las Vegas and at Light Nightclub last month.

You can stream Something for Carl Cox below or purchase the track on Beatport.

Watch Stimming Explain His Live Show

It’s always a curious topic to understand what goes into a live electronic performance or DJ set. Through their “How I Play” video series, DJ Tech Tools has gone in depth with artists such as Dubfire, Chris Liebing, and Matthew Dear regarding their performance set-ups.

In DJ Tech Tools most recent How I Play episode, they bring in Stimming for an elaborate and insightful showcase on his live performance. Stimming’s live show is creatively spontaneous, but he still maintains a strong level of direction and control over the music and technology. Centered around Ableton, and armed with an APC, OP1 Synth, and Mini Moog Voyager, Stimming has his musical tools at the ready to curate excellent sonic landscapes.

Take a look at the How I Play interview below, and you can also take a look at his live set here from the recent Lovelife Boat Party in San Diego.

Rooftop Fire at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas

Today, on July 25th, a rooftop fire broke out at The Cosmopolitan Hotel in Vegas around noon. Several floors of the hotel were evacuated, and so far only one person has been treated for smoke inhalation. The fire was put out within an hour, and investigations are underway as to what caused the fire at the Bamboo Pool at Marquee. Marquee is one of the premier Vegas clubs for electronic and mainstream music, and at this point it is unknown how the fire will affect upcoming events and operations.

Fox5 Vegas has uploaded a video of the fire, and report that 110 firefighters were required to relinquish the flames. Clark County Deputy Fire, Chief Greg Cassell, also states that two people were harmed with minor injuries during the fire.

The total amount of the fire damages has not been determined, but it appears that The Cosmopolitan Hotel will have a very unexpected expense on their hands soon. Stay up to date for more information and news regarding the fire at The Cosmopolitan.

Techno Philosophy, Thrift Stores, and Anthracite – A Conversation with Sian

“It’s tribal. People bullshit on about it being a religious thing, but in a lot of ways it is the most basic idea of celebration” – Sian

There is a primal rhythm deeply rooted in human nature. Music often brings out these feelings and inhibitions, and if there’s one artist that has tapped into this energy it’s Sian. He’s developed a signature sound of techno through a plethora of releases, while curating his own vision of techno through his imprint, Octopus Recordings. Artists such as Sasha Carassi, Harvey McKay, and Jay Lumen have all signed on helping curate the vibe of Octopus, and Sian continues to host numerous Octopus Recordings showcases around the world from Movement to Sonar. In the wake of his recent EP, Medicine Man, Sian has completed and prepared his forthcoming album, Anthracite, with a release date set for August 3rd.

“This was more of a cinematic trip,” explained Sian. “I actually worked on a bunch of tracks as singles, and then I had about 100 tracks and started honing it down to 50, and so on.” Sian’s approach on music is holistic at times as far as inspiration goes. Honing in on specific sounds, or perhaps a surprising voicemail from a good friend, Sian builds a cohesive foundation around the tracks that allows them to stand alone or coexist as one body of work.

As the process came to a close, Sian eventually ended up with 23 tracks to tell the musical story of his new album. Anthracite embodies the peaks and valleys of techno complete with various cinematic landscapes and tantalizing bass line rhythms from start to finish.

Sian with album titleWith a set up comprised of a few Moog Synths, a Korg MS-20, and an array of outboard effects, Sian had the tools at his disposal to start developing tracks from the resonate hypnotic groover of Gulf Stream to the dubby techno textures of Metaverse, and everything inbetween.

We recently met up with Sian to talk in depth about the making of Anthracite, techno philosophy, and an unforgettable story outside of Johannesburg…among other things.  Listen to the Anthracite LP previews and read the full conversation below for more insight. Read more

Tribute to 50 Weapons

A tribute to 50 Weapons – One of the leading electronic labels of the decade

We all knew this day was coming. When 50 Weapons began in 2005 it was their sole intention to have a limited lifespan, and throughout their presence in the music industry they managed to carve a niche in electronic music. The past ten years have seen 50 Weapons curate EP’s and albums from the likes of Benjamin Damage, Cosmin TRG, Bambounou, Truncate, Marcel Dettmann, Addison Groove, among others; all bringing forth a forward thinking and innovative approach to underground electronic music.

50 Weapons had style, grace, and was always at the forefront of musical exploration. It can be a sad moment when something special like this comes to an end, but rather than mourn the closing of 50 Weapons we choose to honor the musical legacy they’ve left behind.

In our tribute to 50 Weapons, we’ve selected some of our favorite tracks over the years…and trust us when we say this…it was no easy task. Enjoy some of our personal favorites from the 50 Weapons catalog, and make sure to take a closer look into their expansive musical library to find your favorites too.
